In your opinion, are martial arts useful in street fighting?

It depends on your art, how you train, and what your intent is. Martial arts can be very effective on the street or as useless as imaginable.

In your opinion, are martial arts useful in street fighting?
Yes martial arts are very useful in street fights. Although they aren't glamorous flying kicks from 20 feet away like in the movies the flexibility balance and overall strength you derive from practicing a martial art will greatly help you in a street fight. Street Fights are not the way to go however. Never engage in a street fight unless absolutely necessary.
Reply:Any art that I studied is very good in a street fight. We were working on street fights the other night. They would punch. we would go into front stance, do an outside block and then a rear roundhouse kick. Well, the black belts were, the lower ranks aren't ready for real stuff like that they just stopped at the block.
Reply:Yes, very useful.
Reply:yup
Reply:While you might not find the specific art that you study available to you in a street fight the way that it is in a sparring match, you will find that your increased strength, speed, coordination, balance, stamina and overall physical self-awareness(knowing your range, limits, etc), will come in extremely handy. Even a professional soccer player would have an advantage in a street fight for those reasons. It's more about learning what you're capable of. And hey, if you get the chance to do a 360 hook, **** it!
Reply:Useful yes , but not insurmountable . Remember in a street fight an opponent can bite off your nose , rip off your ear , stomp your head while you are on the ground , and squeeze your testicles till you faint away .
Reply:There's practical and impractical moves. Best way to learn, spar.
Reply:If your style teaches you things that are impracticle for fighting then it wasn't developed for fighting.

There is a time and a place for everything, I think people seem to forget that the reason that most systems are around is to teach people to fight, they're not to impress chicks or look at your self in the mirror and see how cool you look.

At the end of the day, if you learn your sytem well and it is a practical system then you can use it FOR WHAT IT'S DESIGNED TO DO DER!
Reply:yes you dont have to be einstien to figure that out.

Can we have a new category called "fantasy street fighting?"?

That way the martial arts forum won't have to be overrun by immature kids day dreaming about their video game triumphs and trying to make themselves feel tough by posting a lot of rot and swill.

Can we have a new category called "fantasy street fighting?"?
I'm all for it. That would be quite a refresher from these apparently hundred of invincible loudmouths out there. Lucky for them they never met one another.
Reply:Can the UFC questions go there too?

Especially the ones that start: If Jackie Chan and Jet Li (Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee, etc) were in a UFC fight...................
Reply:maybe not such a bad idea they really should vent their ideas about fantasy moves and ultimate fighting skill somewhere else
Reply:ye good idea i think people are too concerned about who would win between chuck norris and bruce lee rather than how practical arts are in a defensive situation. and yes the ufc could probably do with a diferent catagory but it is a martial art. and also if you dont like it why dont you just not answer the questions and block people who say stupid things on your questions
Reply:If we can include the "Does *BLANK* really work in a r34l fight? (even though I'll never get in a real fight in my life I'd like to argue about how certain things OBVIOUSLY won't work)"
Reply:LOL, YES! Maybe there can be a sub-category called "Secret Death Touch" or "Become a Ninja in a Week Videos".
Reply:thats actually a good ideo send thias question to yahoo!
Reply:Then what would we do for comic releif?
Reply:Yeah!

And what Cinthia said.

But call it Fantasy Martial (cough, cough) Arts.
Reply:There should be a category for any question with the word "vs." in it.

I don't know how ya'll train but I personally feel that martial arts should be under philosophy not under sports, of course this won't be popular because people wan tot think of their activity as a sport because it is physical, but to me it is much more than that.

Which martial art is more effective for street fights : UFC or K1?

i don't know either of them, but i would think either of them

Which martial art is more effective for street fights : UFC or K1?
You are better off avoiding street fighting. Nothing good will come of it.
Reply:Probably UFC. K1 has a lot more rules in it, they cannot fight on the ground like in UFC. Lots of street fight end up in the ground.
Reply:neither is a "martial art" but i get what ur asking. being a black belt in tae kwan do i probably have a bias toward K1, but gotta admit ufc fighters are more well-rounded for street brawls. u gotta have the wrestling grappling skills in a street fight. personally, my feet and hands are quick and strong enuf to fend off a wrestler, but if i were to be taken down, i can see wer i'd be at a disadvantage.
Reply:i would think a browning 9mm vastly more effective than either of them.
Reply:Most martial arts are for defense, when all else fails...not offense.

Don't learn it if you can't understand the dicipline.
Reply:how many people actually street fight these days? all these cowards do is grab a gun. their to scared to street fight. but if i had to choose one, i'd probably sa y UFC.
Reply:U.F.C , MIXED MARTIAL ARTS,and jun fan jit kun do.(if your in America you lucky Bastard.)
Reply:nether, kick them in the nuts and hit them with a bottle. worked for me on more than one occasion.
Reply:Their both organizations not martial arts. But if you are asking which one is closer to a streetfight, UFC is because the fight can go to the ground as well as standing up. K1 is just kickboxing.
Reply:as a bouncer and a minder, i find my boxing skills more use full than any other technique that i have trained in, with martial arts you need space to move about. this in my mind makes me be leave in my boxing skills for my fist and movement and Thai boxing for the use of my legs, elbows and holds. it is also worth noting that most of UFC is taken to the floor for grappling, if this happens on the street you will lose,
Reply:with out doubt u f c and pridefc fighter are more equiped for street fights but that doesnt mean k1 fighters cant adapt many have done, look up mark hunt and mirko cro cop and ull see that k1 fighter can fight in mma

What's your favorite Vince McMahon WM Street Fight?

X-Seven vs. Shane McMahon

XIX vs. Hulk Hogan

22 vs. Shawn Michaels

Also, of these 3, which WM promo was funnier 22's "McMahon Family Prayer" or 23's "She just took a Trump!" or "Get me a sandwich"?

What's your favorite Vince McMahon WM Street Fight?
Mr. McMahon vs. Hulk Hogan---Wrestlemania XlX...Just seeing the two innovators of the WWF go at it was great...Never thought I'd see that match...

Wrestlemania 22 promo was the best...."God I don't like you, and you don't like me..." hahahahahaha....
Reply:SHANE

Jsut for the ending, the pop when Lynda stood up and when Mick came into the ring was great. Another amazing match that night.

And Shane, my god that Coast to Coast was incredible.
Reply:22 vs HBK it was just so coollll...

22 "mcmahon family prayer"
Reply:had to be shane

trish lukes smoking that night and a great slap highlight of the ppv 4 me =p
Reply:22 vs. shawn michles was an amazing match
Reply:Vs HBK.

The only reason the street fight with Shane was good was becuase of all the gimmicks, but the wrestling itself was week. Shane showed off the Coast to Coast, so I guess that was cool, but I would have rather they just let RVD keep that move instead of having to watch tubby boy Shane do it.

But HBK is always amazing to watch, and Hogan just sucks period.
Reply:22 vs Shawn Michaels i loved it when he did a 16 foot jump to vince through a tabble and vince had a trash can on his head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Shane because Father vs Son
Reply:HBK NO DOUBT THAT WAS VERY GOOD TO WATCH
