Could you tell me sth. execellent about aikido's self-defense in street-fighting?

there is none. I did greco wrestling at international wrestling and basically it does all the things aikido wishes it could do in real life.

When we cross trained with aikido guys they were very very basic, could not defend any of our hand control or upper body takedowns, and generally would not let us train againbecause we would not 'allow ourselves to be thrown' by their black belts.

Which apparently is what you are supposed to do when they start turning your wrist etc.

Which is ridiculous-if it does not work, it does not work. Some of their techniques made sense, but they did not apply them in full contact or free sparring, so they never really got the hang of them.

As to the really tricky moves that supposedly make people fly through the air with the flikc of a wrost, all I can say is there are 85million wrestlers in the world constantly competing and looking for new advantages, probably 50 times more people than aikido.

If those tricky techniques actually worked, wrestling and judo would have been using them a long long long time ago.

Sorry it looks great on TV and when Steven seagal does it on the movies, and was probably very lethal when it was first invented, but what gets taught today is just a way to sucker guys into paying for something they think is going to work.

Yeah ^ is right, the only reason you wouldnt pressure test an art is if it didn't work, i remember my Aikido training and thinking back, the only thing i got from it is a sore back from allowing myself to get thrown

Aikido is more of danceing than anything, its very spiritual and is good in that sence but its martial art aplication is about as much as capoeira, some stuff works but its too much of a dance to be trully effective
Reply:I guess I'll take the other road on this one. I train in Aikido as well as BJJ/MMA and some Kali. I have found that the ideas and concepts from Aiki work well and are effective in real life. Alot of people train Aikido in a very soft way, which is fine and dandy. However, I like to get a little more physical with it from time to time. A foe, being someone who is resisting you and trying to take your head off, tends not to allow you to do the tech. on them. When you train Aikido in a relaxed, soft and compliant way all the time, this would give you problems. Now if you train with resistance and non-compliance then you learn that infact the tech. can and does work, you just need to train it alittle more agressive. I love Aikido and will stand behind the fact that it works, at least for me it does. Added to my BJJ it has enhanced both 100 fold for me. This is just my xp and may not be that of others. I understand that I am not the "normal" Aikido student because of my views of realism and combat but for me Aiki works and is very effective.
Reply:The Combat Aikido that Steven Segal does is the most practical kind of Aikido out there.
