How long does it take to be well-trained Akido martial arts. do you think it is effective for street fighting?

what are your thoughts on akido

How long does it take to be well-trained Akido martial arts. do you think it is effective for street fighting?
It will take about 5 years to get a black belt in Aikido. That doesn't mean you will be well-trained enough to handle yourself in a street situation. It means you got the basics down.

Aikido takes long to master and even if you do you will not fair well against someone who has trained the same amount as time as you in Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, or has experience in street fighting. Aikido will work well against someone that is not trained in any martial art or street fighting.

With the popularity of the UFC and PRIDE it seems like everyone is training something now so your chances of meeting someone on the street that has knowledge of fighting is higher. If I were you I would skip the Aikido or supplement it with something that has been proven on the street already.
Reply:It takes years to be well-trained in any martial art, and that's years of difficult, consistent training.
Reply:If you are looking for protection on the street, you don't need MA. You need a gun or a good brain complete w/ working set of sensory organs.
Reply:i dont think akido is worth ur time , ill say try boxing :D and if that doesnt work .... then quit life jk just keep trying
Reply:Being well trained doesn't mean effective. If you want to use aikido effectively in real life...it'll take years. For something that works quickly (if you plan on getting into a fight) boxing and jiu jitsu are the way to go.
Reply:if you train seriously and persistantly, you may feel competant at around 10 years training, but it's really all up to you. aikido is an art that takes longer than your average martial art to feel well-trained in.

the techniques are more 'sophisticated' than those of some of the fighitng arts mentioned in other peoples answers. that said, while they may take longer to be proficient in against a fighter with martial skill, when an aikido technician has attained high level skill, it is possible for him to very easily defeat not only an average street fighter but other skilled martial artists as well.

while i don't think aikido is as effective as some of the other arts out there, the techniques practiced in the dojo can definitely be modified to work for street self defense situations.

the question you may ask your self is; how long will it take YOU to be well trained in aikido to make it effective on the street? it's really all up to you!

good luck!
Reply:All works, the more u its better.
Reply:it takes years to master and it canbe usful in street fights but you need to remember there are no rules in a street fight and every martial art in the world is built on rules and principles
Reply:i do a type of aikibudo and i can say there are a few techniques that make u feel like a pimp and a few where its like "what! that would never work!" then sensei does it 2 u.... and no.. u never master an art... i guess thats why u said well trained.... and that just depends.. on the ryu.. the teacher and the student... u cant go wrong with private classes and praticin at home then when u get to that rank u gatta go figure out what works best for you, come up with aplication so on and such... oh and if u do a soft style do a hard style to.. not sayin they dont individually work but that way ur more balanced and have more 2 make your own... but ne ways depending on how much u pratice u can get good in 1 year or 10 years.... (yes 1 year... my senseis sensei didit in under a year cas he was in the merines and had nuthin better 2 do on down time so thats basicly all he did)
Reply:One again you idiots have missed what the martial arts is all about.

This man brings a rooster to a master rooster fighting instructor for a tournament that was held every year. He told the master train him hard so we can win

After a year, the man goes to the master wanting to take him to fight. the master says not yet. come back in a year he is not ready.

next year, man goes again asking same thing but the master said the same thing. come back again.

many years past, and the rooster got stronger and faster. the man having went every year saw that his rooster lookd better than the best roosters. So he goes back to the master trainer and asks him can he fight now.

the man looked on as his rooster stood in the middle of the ring, and no other rooster wanted to fight him.

thats when you know you are ready!

It takes more than just a few techniques to win a street fight.

It takes being smart enough to know you dont have to fight in the first place. idiots!!!

Roberto -- you talk like someone who has never dedicated years to a discpline, any discipline. And you missing the point of my story shows you really havent a clue upstairs either.

Its not about being big or strong...you idiot....but someone people will never get it.

Oh and about aikido not working in the real world...well guess its a good thing Im a golden Gloves champ, 3rd Dan Tai Kwan Do, 2nd Dan Aikido, 4 years muy thai and I dont need to prove myself by joining some UFC.

why do people talk about things they know nothing about.

Roberto shut your trap and maybe you wont grow up to be a complete idiot. Cause at this rate youll be a lifelong moron in no time at all
Reply:I don't think, "a_l_m_o_s_t_famous," gets the fact that in the real world, u cant always avoid a fight.

And also, his story basically implied that if u get big and strong, no one will want to fight you. Which is not even the point that he was making.

oh yeah, about akido, its useless.

There's a dark secret in martial arts. That secret is that most martial arts (not all) are pretty much made up from some guy along time ago and he thought he was the ****. Then started teaching poeple and built a following.

Its kind of like a Religion.

No matter how much u try to convince a terrorism, that Alla and Suicide Bombing is wrong. They wont believe u.

just like if i went to an akido school and said that their martial arts is useless and a waste of time. They wont believe me.

Trust me. your wasting your time. No akido master, will ever be able to take on a ufc fighter.
Reply:it all depends on how often you go to the dojo and train my husband has been taking aikido for 10 years now. But for you to get good enough for you to handle your self in a real fight on average is around 1 year by then you should be able to take on at least 4 person's at once and handle them with ease. Just keep practicing your foot movements that is one of the biggest foundation's. Dont pay no mind to all those other ppl telling you not to take aikido. Because they DO NOT know what there talking about if they have no taken the style for them self.
Reply:yes it is, it has saved my life a few times me faceing gun once knife five or six times, ball bats once, double teamed more times than i can count. the style i take is tomiki aikido
