Another youth stabbed to death in the street?

and two 16 year olds arrested.

At least seven young people have been stabbed to death this year in random attacks, street fights and robberies.

Other victims include Ben Hitchcock, 16, killed by a single stab wound after a street fight in Beckenham, and student Sian Simpson, 18, stabbed to death in Croydon.

Last week it emerged that police have identified a potential 257 gangs in London, some of whom are known to carry knives and other weapons.

What can and should be done with the youth of today involved in these crimes?

Another youth stabbed to death in the street?
I do not understand that IF the police know there are people waking around with weapons , why can they not lock them up. There are too many so called Human Rights laws and idiots who support them that let these hooligans walk the streets, saying they are from a bad child hood or they are poor, So what , I am not rich but I don' t go round killing and robbing people.IF THEY CARRY WEAPONS THEN THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY MORE RIGHTS.
Reply:Send them to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Reply:Find a big tall building and throw them off - they are scum and do not deserve to walk the same streets as the rest of us
Reply:young people need real work and a focus not a mc job

i saw some young boys yesterday they are bored and dont see a future for themselves they have been let down by society and the goverment

they need something worthwhile to do
Reply:your obsessed mate give it up become a copper or be a vigilante sort your life out it must be depressing.
Reply:It's going to get to the stage that they won't bother to report them anymore unless they're particularly horrific.
Reply:National service. If we are going to spend decent, hard working peoples taxes on taking them to court and giving them meaningless ASBO's then why not pay ex army officers to teach them discipline, morals and standards....money better spent!
Reply:I agree with elizadushku, send this scum out to fight and send the decent boys back home.

It seems a gang culture is emerging in the UK and it's frightening. I left the UK 5 years ago, and yes there was a lot of crime, but it really does seem to have escalated a hell of a lot in just a few years.
Reply:Well

One thing is that there should have been a gun amnesty thats for sure
Reply:Bring back National Service! If they are going to fight at least train them up and send them to war where they can be of some use.
Reply:Teach them that they will be "punished" for the crime %26amp; NOT just get a slap on the wrist because they are a juvenile.

If it doesn't wake the kid up, it will surely wake the parent up to take more responsibility on being more active in the upbringing of their child and seeing to it that he/she stays out of trouble, or face serious fines or imprisonment.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT.........DON'T ASK...............

...........TRUTH HURTS.............
Reply:i personally think the gangs are kids with parents who work! coming home to their latchkey life!
Reply:The answer has to be harsher sentences. More "stop and search" powers for the police may help too, but unfortunately I think this is just the way our society is now, and we're going to have to live with it until the government gets it's act together and actually DOES something, instead of just talking about getting tough on crime.

On a personal note, my son is 21 and I live in fear every time he goes out. He's never been in trouble in his life, but how often do we hear of a young person being killed, just because he's in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Reply:It is a difficult situation to do deal with, but a lot of it probably stems from boredom. A lot of young people who have grown up in council estates feel trapped and think that there is no way out. Youth workers etc that are prepared to work directly with the young people and funding to help create opportunities and goals. Let the young people see that even if they are not academically smart they are still important and that there are lots of opportunities for them in society.

That's about the only thing that I can think of.

jack is sort of right

you are only hearing about some of it but in general crime figures are down - media reporting is skewed

lots of money is going into gangs work in London and I am writing a preventative education programme to be delivered in schools . . .
Reply:The last known population of the UK is 60,776,238 and the size of the teenage poplation (well the under 14 stat) is 17.2% (male 5,349,053/female 5,095,837).

7 young people have been stabbed to death (though it may be more).

Every year there are 3500 fatalities on British Roads, about 25% are pedestrians, and 30% are under 20y/o. = 260 pedestrian children killed by cars.

I'm not suggesting we ban motor vehicles (though I personally dont drive by choice), I'm not saying I condone our young being stabbed to death. I'm just trying to put a perspective on things.

Drugs have a part to play (and I include alcohol) in conflict between our young. Its ironic then that the UK is protecting 85% of the worlds opium poppy production with our troops lives in Afghanistan.
Reply:I agree with Snikleback. Teach them another way of life. This gang culture thing is only because they are creating a society they feel they are welcome in.
Reply:bring back old fashioned discipline in schools. kids these days taunt teachers, knowing nothing will be done. parents should be more responsible and be held responsible for the action of their kids. kids have no respect.
Reply:Unless something real and authentic is done, there will be a lot more than 257 gangs.

There must be some sort of 'upheaval, so to speak' to stop this.

The world is lacking both 'internal as well as external' peace. Every one is killing, in some way or another, evry one else.

The great impact of the 'role-model' is retreating and being retreated.
Reply:I think it is know a total of 18 youths that have been murdered in this way since the beginning of the year.( ref: BBC News)

Last Monday a youth was stabbed in the chest, though fortunately, not fatally, approx 100 yards from my front door. So he was my neighbours child.

Two youths yesterday had to be supported by their parents yesterday as they broke down in court after being convicted of manslaughter.

We have to start at home and then in the classroom. If we have to start a 5 years old we must.

I was born in East London at the tail end of the Krays life on the streets. They "only did it to their own kind". Actually this is not strictly true because everyone else was terrified of them.

This knowledge was enough to keep myself and contemporaries on the straight and narrow. When Monty Python did the Piranha Brothers Sketch we knew exactly who they emulating.

I know we would rather shelter our kids from this, but we can't. We must nip this culture in the bud. Take these boys who were succesfully prosecuted and show them to their peers, let them see the consequences.

Take the scum who give them the weapons and push drugs at them and stick them in a glass prison.

If you see anybody dealing or doing anything untoward report it. Stop being so complacent.

The police will only get the extra man power if the people demand it.

Children only behave in this way when they are fed up with life themselves. It is up to us a society to make sure this is not allowed to happen. If they think we care this might not happen.
Reply:Far too much racial integration.

Far too many drugs.

Far too little discipline.

Far too many do-gooders looking after the interests of the culprits

Far too many residents turning a blind eye.

Far too many uneducated kids

Far too many dole scroungers

Far too much freely available drink

and on and on and on.
