What do you think of Jason Bourne's expertise of kali? How effective of a street fighting skill is it?

I just started an Arnis class at the local YMCA, and I am really enjoying it. But, it honestly doesn't look much like anything that the fictional character in the Bourne movies is doing. The actual style appears to me to be very effective.

Understand, that there are 78 recognized dialects in the Philippines. One region can be like a different country compared to the next. The making of the Bourne movies does not say if they are using Kali/Eskirma/Arnis from which of the 3 major regions of Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao.

The fact that they are using the word "Kali" suggests that this is a Hollywood version of the Filipino art.

real escrima is pretty effective
Reply:nice choreography, i enjoyed how he kicked that guys @$$ with a book. well, done! anyways, it can be very useful in a street fight
Reply:Looks pretty good. Although some of the moves are a bit overboard, but that's probably only due to gratuitous use of cinematic license, it is still a movie afterall and they need to sell it. The Kali I studied did have unorthodox disarming moves and counters against bladed weapons, but not as complicated as those in the movie. Most blade attacks target the limbs and extremities to draw blood and try to weaken or soften the opponent up for the kill. Though I wouldn't try any of those fancy kicks as that would likely draw a knife thru your leg and groin area.
Reply:The Filipino martial arts are very effective. Its a full range to close quarters fighting system that employs grappling and a well versed use in weapons.
